  1. I spoke this afternoon at the opening of the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific on the links between peace, security, and development. The internationally agreed 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is clear that there can be no sustainable development without peace, and no peace without sustainable development. The enormous socio-economic progress of the Asia-Pacific in recent decades has been made on a foundation of relative stability, but not all parts of the region have been able to achieve the peace which sustained and sustainable development requires. My speech talks about the importance of peace for development.
