Appeal for support for food bank to support people through Covid-19 lockdown
New Zealand's Covid-19 Level 4 lock down and state of emergency over these past four weeks has been essential in enabling the country to make good progress towards eliminating the disease. To adopt any other strategy would have led to thousands of deaths, with elderly people and those with pre-existing health conditions at greatest risk, but with the disease able to kill people of any age.
The Government has dug deep to support wages, businesses, and a wide range of organisations, but still quite a number of those on living on low incomes which have been further reduced during the lock down need extra support from our community-based organisations.
I am Patron of Budgeting & Family Support Services. Mangere Otara & Tuakau. Their Chief Executive Officer, Darryl Evans, tells me that requests for food parcels have soared, and they badly need more support to help poor households.
