Helen Clark is President of Chatham House - The Royal Institute of International Affairs, Member of the Board of Directors of the World Leadership Alliance - Club de Madrid, and Patron of the Himalayan Trust. Helen Clark has most recently become a member of The Elders.

Helen Clark joined The Elders in September 2023. The Eldres, founded in 2007 by Nelson Mandela is a group of independent global leaders who have come together to address some of the world's most pressing problems. The Elders include former heads of state, former United Nations officials, and other prominent individuals who work collectively to promote peace, human rights, and social justice. They provide independent advice on issues such as conflict resolution, climate change, and access to healthcare.

On 20th July 2021, Helen Clark was elected President of Chatham House. Helen Clark is replacing Sir John Major and will join Baroness Eliza Manningham-Buller and Lord Darling as one of the Institute’s three serving presidents. 

Chatham House Director Robin Niblett welcomed the appointment:

‘We are excited to have found someone with the high-level political experience and who shares the strong reputation for integrity that Sir John enjoys. Helen Clark is highly regarded around the world for her past and current endeavours. Her election also underscores the institute’s global outlook and priorities, which she is so well qualified to help guide.’


World Leadership Alliance - Club de Madrid

Member of the Board of Directors

Helen Clark is a member of the Board of Directors of WLA Club de Madrid, the world's largest forum of former heads of state and government. This non-profit, independent organisation was created in 2001 to promote democracy and change in the international community. Composed of 95 regular members of whom 64 are former presidents and 39 are former prime ministers from 65 countries. The organisation works together with governments, inter-governmental organisations, civil society, scholars and representatives from the business world.

Among its main goals are the strengthening of democratic institutions and counselling on the resolution of political conflicts in the areas of democratic leadership and governance, as well as response to crisis and post-crisis situations.

The Himalayan Trust

Helen Clark is Patron of The Himalayan Trust, an international non-profit humanitarian organisation working in the Everest region of Nepal. The Himalayan Trust works with local partners to bring quality education, safe water, and better healthcare to communities living in this remote, mountainous region of Nepal.

Sir Edmund and Louise Hillary founded the Himalayan Trust in the 1960s. Ever since then, they’ve inspired New Zealanders to give their time, money and support to help the people of Nepal through the Himalayan Trust.
