Webinar this Friday on New Zealand's journey towards becoming tobacco-smoke-free

HEADS UP: The Helen Clark Foundation and Action on Smoking and Health New Zealand WEBINAR THIS FRIDAY ON NEW ZEALAND'S JOURNEY TOWARDS BECOMING TOBACCO-SMOKE-FREE.

Interested in New Zealand’s tobacco-smoke-free legislation? This Friday, 28 August marks the 30th anniversary of the Smoke-free Environments Act. I was the Minister of Health who led the passage of the Bill through Parliament. It wasn't easy, but huge progress has been made in reducing consumption of this deadly substance. In 1990, one in every three New Zealand adults smoked. Today, it's one in eight. See my op ed in the Sunday Star Times on on this.

Recent research suggests that the proportion of tobacco smokers who will die from their habit is two-thirds of all smokers: see an article in Washington Post.

This Friday at 11.30 am, 28 August, I will be discussing New Zealand's progress in reducing smoking rates and the way ahead with Professor Robert Beaglehole, Chair of Action on Smoking and Health. The conversation will be moderated by The Helen Clark Foundation, Deputy Director Holly Walker.
