SIPRI Annual Lecture on the Environment of Peace Report. 23 May 2022

The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) lecture series has a tradition of strong speakers. It started four years ago with a lecture by Hans Blix, a Swedish diplomat and politician for the Liberal People's Party. Blix was followed by Michelle Bachelet, former President of Chile and Head of Human Rights Office in Geneva, who spoke about human rights and gender equality. My last year’s predecessor was the late Madeleine Albright who delivered a lecture on democracy in post-COVID world.

I have been privileged since 2020 to take part in the international panel supporting the preparation of SIPRI’s new report on the Environment of Peace. It set out to look at the peace and security dimensions of environmental crises, and to show how taking a responsible approach to the environment helps build peace.
